About

We need your help to create new thesis projects on the Pine Ridge Reservation with Professor Laura Sullivan. In follow up to the wihinape light box she developed with thesis student Vanessa Robinson, Dr. Sullivan will bring a group of students from A and B section to engage with the Lakota tribe later this month. The Kettering team will explore water pump applications of solar energy, and will create thesis project proposals based upon what they learn. As a group they'll then select two proposals to proceed with project/product development this fall.

The Pine Ridge Reservation is in southwest South Dakota, a 3,500 square mile reservation with a population of 28,000 people. The problem: only two percent of the land is farmable. The reservation is inhabited by the Oglala Lakota Tribe and is considered one of the poorest parts of the country. The Kettering team is collaborating with the Lakota people to not only solve the problem of electricity on the reservation but also to empower the tribe to improve its living conditions.
